Siena, Italy

Founded In: Settled in Etruscan times around 700 BC; Empire 1125–1555AD; Unified with Italy 1800s
Language: Italian, plus a little English
Suggested Length of Stay: 1-3 Full Days

It is said that the Siena was first settled by Senius, son of Remus and nephew of Romulus around 700 BC.  While the settlement didn’t grow much during Etruscan times, it blossomed into a formidable empire during the Middle Ages.  Because the Empire fell in 1555, much of the beautiful city was never modernized and has retained its Medieval wonder.  Today Siena’s charm makes it at least a one day must visit location in Tuscany, but for multi-day visits Siena also serves as a great jump off point to wineries in all directions.  Enjoy our Siena travel guide!
